| Task Tracker Breaktime Routine |
A structured activity combining short bursts of focused learning with planned movement or sensory breaks. Designed to help students with ADHD-Mild sustain attention and complete tasks while leveraging breaks to reset focus.
Objectives:
Improve task completion within defined timeframes.
Develop a balance between work and breaks to maintain engagement.
Encourage the use of self-monitoring tools for focus and time management.
Materials Needed:
Task checklist or tracker (can include visuals).
Timer or stopwatch.
Movement break cards or sensory tools (stress balls, fidget toys, etc.).
Reward chart for motivation (optional).
Steps:
Prepare the Routine: Set up a list of 3-4 manageable tasks. Tasks should be clear and concise (e.g., solve 5 math problems, read a paragraph, write one sentence).
Set the Timer: Allocate 5-10 minutes per task depending on the student’s focus ability.
Work Phase: The student works on the task while using the tracker to check off completed items. Encourage them to stay seated and focused during this period.
Break Phase: After each task, allow a short (2-5 minutes) movement or sensory break. Examples include stretching, jumping, using a fidget tool, or drawing.
Cycle Completion: Repeat the cycle until all tasks are done. Gradually increase the work phase duration as the student demonstrates improved focus.
Reflection: Discuss how the student felt during the activity and identify what helped them stay focused.
Frequency:
Daily or as part of structured learning time, adjusted based on the student’s needs and progress.
Expected Outcome:
The student will gradually extend their ability to stay on task and develop a rhythm that balances focused work with necessary breaks, improving overall productivity and engagement.
Resources Used:
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Apply a flexible and inclusive teaching approach that accommodates diverse learning styles and needs, ensuring accessibility and participation for the student.
Makey Makey: Integrate hands-on STEM activities by using the Makey Makey kits to create interactive tasks that enhance focus and engagement during work phases.
Structured Teaching: Employ structured teaching methods to organize tasks in clear, predictable steps, helping the student transition between activities and maintain attention. |
