The Index for Inclusion is a comprehensive framework designed to support schools in becoming more inclusive by fostering values of equity, participation, and respect for diversity. Developed by Tony Booth and Mel Ainscow, the Index provides tools for self-assessment, reflection, and action planning to create learning environments that are accessible and welcoming to all students, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities.

The Index encourages schools to evaluate their practices across three dimensions:
Creating Inclusive Cultures: Building an environment that values all members of the school community.
Producing Inclusive Policies: Developing policies that ensure equity and participation for all.
Evolving Inclusive Practices: Implementing teaching and learning approaches that meet the diverse needs of all students

Creating Inclusive Cultures:
A school uses the Index to conduct workshops with staff, parents, and students to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity. This helps foster a culture where students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) feel valued and included.

Producing Inclusive Policies:
Using the Index, a school revises its behavior management policy to incorporate positive behavioral support strategies tailored to the needs of all students.

Evolving Inclusive Practices:
Teachers apply the Index to redesign classroom activities, ensuring they are accessible for all students. For instance, visual aids and simplified instructions are introduced to support students with communication challenges.
